Time for an update! Senior year has been great so far. My international security courses, including Small Wars and The European Union, are captivating and relevant. The professors who teach them are well-traveled, interesting, and fun to listen to. I’m working for OU IT and a veterinary clinic in Norman, and I’m preparing for the Air Force after graduation. Since freshman year, the military has been calling to me, but I was still adjusting to life at college and wasn’t sure about it. Every year after that, I researched the branches, spoke to enlisted friends, and considered my options. In the end, finishing my degree before applying for Officer Candidate School seemed most rational, and I chose the Air Force with the hopes of flying planes in the future. I’m still interested in becoming a Foreign Service Officer, but that will be a pursuit following my military career.
I’ve been visiting the Sarkeys Fitness Center at OU regularly. Military physical fitness (PFT) tests require a fast 1.5 mile run, pushups, and sit-ups. Nothing crazy, but you’ve got to do well on those three components. My days also consist of studying for the AFOQT (Air Force Officer Qualifying Test).
Aside from concrete goals, I’ve prioritized sleeping adequately, eating well, reading good books, and enjoying time with good people. I just had my 22nd birthday, and it reminded me to enjoy the time I have as much as possible. At the start of college, money was the only thing on my mind. Now, I care about serving others and leading a fulfilling life of laughter and adventure. Whatever happens, I’m ready for it.
