A few weeks ago I went to a meeting held by OU’s Spanish Club. We discussed plans for the year, and my friend and I met three Korean students who, along with their biochemistry degrees, were pursuing Spanish fluency. We spoke with them for awhile before it was time for the conversation segment of the meeting, hosted by Professor Shawn Gralla. We mostly listened as the more advanced students spoke with him about current events, but on a few occasions, we piped up to share our thoughts. Hearing them speak so quickly and assuredly made me even more excited to continue with my minor, and I know that with time spent abroad in Latin America, I’ll be on my way to gaining a better understanding and appreciation for Latin American culture and language. I hope to incorporate more cultural learnings to the Spanish Club’s meetings next semester, as I’ve applied for an officer position.
